Removing Pet and Coffee Stains from Carpets
Old pet stains that have set into a carpet will be nearly impossible to remove without a powerful steam cleaning machine that cleans that carpet, as well as the surface underneath which may have become contaminated with mildew. In the event that a pet stain is fresh though, it’s fairly easy to remove.
The first step is to soak up as much dampness out of the affected carpet area as possible. If there’s any vomit or feces on the carpet, remove it as soon as possible by using doggie bags, gloves, or bags which do not have any holes in them. Then dab the carpet using paper towels or cloth that can be thrown away, without rubbing any of the moisture deeper into the carpet.
If you have a carpet cleaning solution available, now would be the time to apply it to the carpet and let it sit for several minutes before beginning to clean the carpet. Carpet brushes are extremely effective during this process, but rubbing the solution with paper towels or cloths can also get the job done, although it will not be as effective. Without a cleaning solution, you can still clean up the mess by mixing in 1/4th of a cup of vinegar with a quart of warm water and then spraying the solution on the affected area. Likewise, laundry detergent and water mixed into a spray bottle will also work.
In the event that your spill was caused by coffee, you can use the same steps as outlined above. It is recommended that you use a carpet cleaning product designed specifically for removing coffee stains though. These products can be found at places such as Home Depot, Wal-Mart, Target, and so forth. If you can get a special product for removing the type of stain you’re dealing with, within an hour or so of the initial clean up, you should definitely do so. Such an investment will go a long way in saving your carpet from becoming permanently stained or damaged by using a product which wasn’t designed for it.
Removing Wine Stains from Carpets
Before cleaning up wine it’s important to be extremely careful while dabbing away extra moisture. If you aren’t careful you could end up either pushing the red stains deeper into your carpet, or spreading the wine onto the surrounding area and other objects such as your sofa.
If you drink wine often or are worried about spilling it, it would be best to keep a carpet wine stain remover on hand. They are often under $10 and last a long time.
Removing Ink from Carpets
If you get ink or paint on your carpet, it can be a nightmare to get it out. After removing the majority of the surface contaminant, you can apply rubbing alcohol to the area to weaken the substance at hand. Do not rub in the rubbing alcohol or add too much of it. Just let it stand for a few minutes and then vacuum up whatever is left.
It will take a few rounds of cleaning to remove ink or paint, so feel free to apply more rubbing alcohol and vacuum it up again. Adding hairspray, nail polish removers, and other alcohol-based solutions in delicate amounts can also help weaken the staining properties of the spill. Finally, it’s recommended to use a special carpet-cleaning product and to schedule a professional cleaning as soon as possible.
