The First Step to Removing Stains from Tiles
Before you get started with removing stains you want to determine what material of tile you are dealing with. For example, if you don’t know if your tile has a matte or polished finish and you just start using non-recommended products on it, that will lead to irreversible damage. There’s no point in rushing through your stain removal process or going about it haphazardly. That will only result in unnecessary replacement or repair expenses.
Removing Stains from Ceramic, Granite, or Marble
If you find out that you have ceramic tiles, then you’ll be able to get stains out with an appropriate ceramic tile cleaning paste. You can leave the paste on the stained areas for five to ten minutes, giving the porous surface a chance to absorb the cleaning materials. Then you’ll want to brush the affected areas with a non-scratch nylon pad. Anything else may cause spotting, scratches, or unsatisfactory results.
For granite tiles, you can use the same method as above. If you’re in a pinch and don’t want to get a cleaning product from a store, you can create your own cleaning paste using baking soda and water. However, the result will not be as spotless.
When it comes to cleaning marble tiles, you’ll have to be extremely diligent in your research, preparation, and cleaning techniques. Marble is a very beautiful material but it is also delicate. You’ll want to make sure that the cleaner you use has a pH level that is neutral. Anything that has a strong base, or is acidic, can result in etching and other undesired issues. This is why it’s highly not recommended to create your own cleaning solution using water and dish detergent: especially since dish detergent is so abrasive.
Getting stains and grime out of grout is arguably the toughest part of the tile cleaning process. If you find yourself becoming frustrated or overwhelmed with cleaning grout, then you are certainly not alone.
The best way to clean grout through DIY methods is by using a rag, a toothbrush, and vinegar. The process starts with pouring vinegar on your grout, letting it sit for ten minutes, and then vigorously brushing it with your toothbrush.
Using a mixture of baking soda and vinegar also works wonders. However, no matter how effective the toothbrush method is it does take a lot of time and elbow grease.
